Glossary

If you encounter unfamiliar terms when looking at our website or in our documents, you may consult the glossary. Here you will find a description of the most common terms in the field of gas transport.

Auction +

The procedure for award of firm primary capacities at market and cross-border transfer points on the TRAC-X primary platform of all German long-distance gas grid operators. It is necessary to distinguish between daily, monthly, quarterly and yearly products. Auction dates are published in advance in the TRAC-X primary auction calendar

Unique code for a balancing group, which is assigned by the balancing group network operator to the respective balancing group manager, and which serves to identify the nominations or renominations of gas quantities

Balancing group network operator +

A market area-wide network operator, or a third party, with whom a balancing group can be established, and with whom a balancing group contract can be concluded

Biogas +

Gas produced by fermentation of biomass in the absence of oxygen

Biomethane +

Biogas or other gaseous biomass processed to natural gas quality (DVGW G 260) and input into the gas grid

Capacity +

Maximum hourly flow rate at an entry or exit point within a particular period of time, which is expressed according to the network operator's specifications in m³/h (standard volume) or kWh/h

Connectee +

A final user (e.g. power station, industry), a downstream network operator, a gas reservoir operator, a supplier of biogas/hydrogen gas/synthetic methane having or applying for a direct connection with the ONTRAS grid

Connection user +

Any end consumer who uses a connection to the low-pressure, medium-pressure, or high-pressure network for the extraction of gas, within the framework of a contract or connection usage relationship as per §3 of the Ordinance on General Conditions for Network Connection and its Usage for Gas Supply at Low Pressure (Low Pressure Connection Ordinance NDAV) of 01/11/2006.

Contract +

The term encompasses the entry contract, exit contract, and balancing group contract

Cross-border point +

Connecting network interconnection point between the networks of two contiguous countries

Design temperature +

Temperature determined according to the relevant climate zone as per DIN EN 12831 supplementary sheet 1, table 1a

Distribution system operators +

Distribution system operators are operators of a network for retail supply

Entry network operator +

The network operator of an entry point with whom the transport customer concludes an entry contract

Entry point +

A point within a market area, at which gas can be transferred to a network operator's network, including transfer at import points, domestic sources, storage facilities, mixing plants and conversion plants

Exit network operator +

The network operator of an exit point with whom the transport customer concludes an exit contract

Exit point +

A point within a market area, at which a transport customer can extract gas from a network operator's network at market area borders, for the purpose of storage, or in order to supply end consumers. If the exit network operator is a local distribution network operator, the exit point is also the metering point

FCFS +

First committed, first served: the procedure for award of capacities at grid entry and exit points (not including firm primary capacities at market and cross-border transfer points)

Firm capacity +

Capacity which can be booked by the transport customer on a fixed basis as per §4 of the network access conditions

Fiscal gas year +

Period from 1 October, 6 am of a calendar year, to 1 October, 6 am of the following calendar year

Injection facility (for biogas) +

A measuring and regulating installation for input of natural or bio-natural gas into the gas grid (individual components: gas cleaning and drying, measurement on arrival, conditioning, compression, measurement at input, input)

Interruptible capacity +

Capacity which can be booked by a transport customer on an interruptible basis as per §4 of the network access conditions the use of interruptible capacity can be interrupted by the network operator as per §39 of the network access conditions

Load flow commitment +

Contractual agreement between transport customer and network operator regarding the commitment to provide a specific gas flow at an entry or exit point In particular, load flow commitments include entry commitments

Market area +

A combination of (partial) networks at www.gasnetzkarte.de you can see which individual (partial) networks belong to which market areas

Market area coupling point +

A grid junction linking market areas

market area manager +

A balancing group network operator in a market area is responsible for management of balancing groups and regulating energy and for operation of the virtual trading point

Market area-wide network +

(Partial) network(s) belonging to the market area-wide network operator(s)

Market area-wide network operator +

A market area's network operator(s) named as market area-wide network operator(s) upon creation of the market area, or third parties appointed by such operators, to whom rights and duties of the market area-wide network operator(s) are transferred in whole or in part

Network buffer +

Possibility of storing gas by compression in transmission and distribution networks in so far as the compression does not take place for network control

Network connection point +

A point in a grid where a pipeline, another network, a final consumer, a reservoir operator or a biogas production plant is or could be connected to the ONTRAS grid

Network connection request +

A written application to a grid operator a direct grid connection submitted by a final consumer (e.g. power station, industry), another network operator, a gas reservoir operator or a biogas supplier

Network operator +

The term encompasses entry network operators, exit network operators and balancing group network operators

Nomination +

Declaration of the gas quantities to be transported within defined timeframes, as per §22 of the network access conditions and as per the Operating Manual, appendix NZB 2 of the network access conditions

Offtake +

The maximum power utilization in the design state of the network set at an entry or exit of a local distribution system

Renomination +

Subsequent modification of the nomination
